High electric bills are hitting us all, especially those of us living here in the infamous St. Louis with our high humidity weather, but by making a few changes you can actually reduce your monthly bill by up to 30%. I don’t know about you, but $30-$40 extra a month will allow us to take the grand kids out to Pizza (of course 1 Pizza isn’t near enough anymore) and a movie. So here goes;
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or your highest comfort temperature. Each degree cooler than 78 increases your bill by 3%. If you’re going on vacation set the A/C to 80 degrees or higher
- Make sure your A/C is properly insulated
- Install solar screens or tint on sunny windows
- Keep your A/C filter changed and clean
- Close shades and blinds on the sunny side of your house during peak sunlight
- Turn on the ceiling fans
- Use the new type fluorescent bulbs
- Clean out the lint catcher on your dryer
- Wash/ dry clothes in the early morning or evening
- Set your thermostat between 37 and 42 in the fridge and 0 to 5 degrees in your freezer
- Turn off lights, TV and radio when no one is in the room
- Purchase an automatic thermostat
See you next time on the corner
